Creating Innovative Solutions Today for a Better Tomorrow

Honolulu, Hawaii

Televised coverage of July 2007 recognition of Waipahu Intermediate School “Botball” robotics team airs throughout December on Olelo Channel 54

The Waipahu Intermediate School students were surprised when the robots they had designed, built, and programmed performed well enough to carry them to the finals in the Hawaii regional Botball tournament back in April 2007. They were even more surprised when they found that those finals would pit them against high school students who were several years older and much more experienced. The surprises kept coming as the Waipahu Intermediate Botball team rose up through the tournament, eventually finishing in 3rd place overall and winning “Rookie Team of the Year” honors.

Near the end of the school year, Congressman Neil Abercrombie showed up in person at Waipahu Intermediate School to deliver a final surprise: An engraved congressional plaque celebrating the team’s achievement. For the students, it was a moment never to forget. And in giving thanks to their advocates and sponsors, teacher Gayle Loui didn’t forget about the two engineers from Referentia Systems Incorporated, who helped mentor the students and coach them in design, programming, and project management for their autonomous robotics project. Jay Knight (a Waipahu Intermediate alumnus) and Chris Richmond, both software engineers at Referentia, spent time each week with the students throughout their project, helping them understand and apply key programming principles needed to perform the autonomous robotics tasks required in the Botball challenge.

Congressman Abercrombie underscored the importance of Referentia’s approach to community involvement and workforce development. “Referentia is a high tech company here in Hawaii,” the Congressman told the students and faculty at Waipahu Intermediate School. “And they have an interest in kids developing their high tech skills, which is what’s involved in putting robotics together… we have a high tech industry that’s been developing in Hawaii, they’re hiring locally, they’re working locally, and they’re able to compete nationally for very important grants…and so when we can get these young students prepared, as they are here at Waipahu Intermediate, then we’re forming a foundation for these companies to be able to succeed here in Hawaii.”

Video coverage of the Congressman’s July 2007 visit to the school and presentation of the congressional plaque to the Waipahu Intermediate School Botball team is included in the December 2007 episode of Congressman Abercrombie’s regular television program “Hawaii Now”. The show airs every Tuesday night throughout December from 7:00 to 7:30 pm on Olelo Community Television “Views” Channel 54.
