FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski visited Referentia offices for a briefing on Referentia's cutting-edge cyber security solutions related to protecting the smart grid SCADA systems and securely extending the reach of the smart grid to consumers through broadband. Representatives from the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD), and local power utilities also participated in the briefing.
"Chairman Genachowski showed strong interest in Referentia's cyber security and interoperability technology building blocks to enable the use of broadband for the Nation's smart grid initiative. A critical issue preventing the modernization of the nation's infrastructure are cyber attacks which are a major threat to many aspects of National Security including economic, social, energy, public safety, etc.," said Referentia President Nelson Kanemoto.
This past March, the FCC Chair unveiled his National Broadband Plan to spread affordable Internet access throughout the U.S. and to establish the U.S. as the leader in mobile applications. The National Broadband Plan include goals of supporting the smart grid, creating more jobs, improving healthcare, and encouraging energy independence. Chairman Genachowski was accompanied by members of Senator Inouye's staff.
